The American artist, Robert Indiana, behind the popular “LOVE” sculpture, was born in New Castle, Indiana and studied art and design at various universities before settling in New York in the early 50s. Indiana’s “LOVE” image was initially created for a Christmas card for New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1965 which featured bold red letters with a green and blue backdrop. Five short years later, the image was rendered into a sculpture made from COR-TEN steel in 1970 to be housed in Indiana’s Indianapolis Museum of Art.

The notable “tilted O” in Indiana’s piece is described as “giving the the four letters dynamism.. theres nothing more [dynamic] than an ‘O’ at attention”. On May 19, 2018, Robert Indiana died of respiratory failure at the age of 89. His work still lives on in museums all across the globe, such as: Israel, New York, and Japan.

Onetime’s “STL_LVE” design draws much of it’s inspiration from Indiana’s late work of the “Love (sculture)”. While there is no slanted “O”, the proverbial “period” in “ST.L” is replaced to create balance and attention, much like Indiana’s tilted vowel. This design is nothing but paying homage to Indiana’s life and work, and hopes to spread attention and share history of this amazing American artist.
