Design Story:
St. Louis, Missouri, was founded on February 15, 1764, by Pierre Laclède and his stepson Auguste Chouteau as a French fur trading post. Laclède chose the site along the Mississippi River for its strategic location and rich resources. The settlement was named after King Louis IX of France and quickly became a key hub for trade, especially in furs. Although founded under French control, Spain governed St. Louis from 1770 to 1800 before it was returned to France and later sold to the U.S. in the Louisiana Purchase (1803). The city's founding laid the groundwork for its role as the "Gateway to the West."
