Design Story:
Venture Stores was a discount department store chain founded in 1970 in St. Louis, Missouri, as a subsidiary of May Department Stores. It was designed to compete with retailers like Kmart and Walmart, offering affordable clothing, home goods, and electronics. Venture expanded rapidly, reaching over 70 stores across the Midwest. However, by the 1990s, financial struggles and increased competition led to its decline. In 1998, Venture filed for bankruptcy, and its remaining stores were liquidated or taken over by other retailers, including Kmart. Despite its closure, Venture remains a nostalgic part of St. Louis retail history, remembered for its bold black-and-white striped storefronts.
